昨日クリスマス・カードの英文例をご紹介したので、今日は年賀状の英文例のお話をしようと思う。

欧米では、年賀状を送る習慣は無く、クリスマスカードに「ついで」的にHappy New year! という事が多い。

実際、Happy New Year は、「良いお年を」と「明けましておめでとう」の両方の意味を持っていて、クリスマスを過ぎたあたりから使い出すのである。

そんな風習の違いがあるから、ちょっとそんな説明も添えて、外国人の友達に年賀状やメールを送ると良いのではないかと思う。

Happy New Year

Thanking you for all your kindness during the past year and wishing you health and prosperity in the New Year.

自分の名前

*************

クリスマスカードの文面をちょと変えて、
May the new year bring you happiness and the best of everything.
とか、
May peace, joy and happiness be yours in the new year.
なんて形で使えば良いので、それ程難しくはない。


ただ、「昨年はお世話になりました。今年もよろしくお願いします。」という文面は、ちょっと考えた方が良いように思う。

英文例で、
Thank you for all your kindness you showed me during the past year.
I hope for your contined favor and support this year.
なんて感じのを見るけれど、「親切をありがとう。今年も親切にしてくれる事を期待しているよ」って、ちょっとずうずうしくない？という印象を受ける。


せめてちょっと控えめに、
I would like to ask you a continued favor this new year.
や
We look forward to your continued good will this new year.
なんて感じにするか、
「今年もよろしく」曖昧な定型句は省いて、
Thanking you for all your kindness during the past year, I hope peace and happiness be yours.
なんて感じにするのも手。


でもって、
In Japan, we send Nengajo (New Year's Day postcards) to our friends and relatives. It is similar to Christmas cards in Western culture. In the cards, we tell a little about ourselves or our immediate family to those who live faraway or does not often meet.

と、ざっくり英語で年賀状の説明をして、自分の近況についてちょこっとメッセージを書くと良い感じ。

それはちょっと無理。。。という方は、
My new year resolution is to study English hard so that I can tell you about myself next year!
なんて感じでごまかすのも良いかも。


日本っぽーい写真と共に送れば喜ばれるかも。
